Obituary - "The demise lately of John Walker, Esquire, Elder of New Annan, deserved more than a passing notice at his decease. He was 87 years, 2 months. He left a widow and twelve children to mourn their loss, besides 75 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren. He emigrated from Dumfriesshire, Scotland to this Island in 1822. He was a pioneer settler in New Annan, when it was an unimproved forest wilderness. By a strong constitution, industry, perseverance, sobriety, and above all, the Blessing of God. On his efforts, he succeeded in amassing quite a large amount of property, his hospitable house of full and plenty, was always a refuge for the poor and needy, and especially a welcoming home to the ministers of the gospel. He was for a great many years an Elder, and by long acquaintance and association, was endeared for his true, honest, unassuming piety, earnestness, cheerfulness, good judgment, and other natural abilities. He was a favourite of his minister, the late Rev. R.S. Patterson, whom he generally accompanied in his pastoral visits. He was a loving husband, and affectionate father, good neighbour. During his last illness, he had a pious advice for everybody who approached his dying bedside, and his death was most happy and triumphant." (The Examiner, 23 February, 1883; The Presbyterian Feb 22, 1883.)

"Mr. John Walker, of New Annan, an old and very highly respected member of the community, died on Monday last at the advanced age of 86 years." (Summerside Journal, 30 November 1882, p. 3, col. 1 & 2).18,9

The religion differences between Thomas James Walker and Virginia Easter (Wiggins) Walker caused a slight problem upon his death. They both wanted to be buried together and both religions would not allow this to happen unless one of them switched, which neither of them would do. Apparently the problem was solved, as Thomas & Virginia (Wiggins) Walker are both buried in Peoples Cemetery, Kensington, PEI. This story was sent to the author by Kathy Sheehan, who was told this by her 2nd cousin, David Roscoe Walker.Inscription: At Rest / Virginia Easter Wiggins / Wife of Thomas J. The following story was received from Kathy Sheehan: While heading home from McGill University Cecil met his future wife, Muriel Ketchum. Muriel was living in Saint John when she decided to apply for a job as a milliner for someone named Laura Walker, on Prince Edward Island. Coincidentally, Laura was Cecil's sister. They were both on the same train headed for the Island, back in the day when trains travelled to the Island via the ferry. Cecil and Muriel got to know each other during the trip, perhaps flirting a bit. As it turned out Laura was at the ferry landing to meet each of them, but they weren't aware they were to meet the same person. Thus, their romance began. They married about a year and a half later. They had eight children; four survived to adulthood, one died as a two month old baby, two miscarriages and one female stillborn.7

AnecdoteThe father-son relationship between James Walker (c1732-1816), his wife Sarah Hill (c1731-1814), and David Walker (1762-1844) is a proposal based on the age difference of 30 years, close proximity of their farms in Priestside, and that James & David each paid a horse tax three days apart. The evidence is circumstantial, but compelling. James Walker and Sarah Hill are buried with his parents, John Walker (c1704-1739) and Mary Johnston (c1706-1771), in the Dalton Village Graveyard, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.3,4
AnecdoteThere is a story about the origin of the surname Walker. "Wa(u)lking the Cloth", extracted from a Scottish list: 'Walker' means 'Walker of the Cloth'. This was a transitional process from liquid to cloth, and workers walked it in their bare feet to stretch it. In the Highlands 'waulking' the tweed is a process of shrinking the cloth. A group (usually women) would sit around a wooden table and the long length of damp tweed was held by them all. It was passed through their hands, and bumped down on the table as it was passed along. There were traditional songs sung to maintain the rhythm of the waulking.5

St. Eleanors Bazaar

His Excellency Sir Donald Campbell, accompanied by the Hon. Mr. Haviland, left on Monday last for St. Eleanors to be present at the opening of the Bazaar, for the relief of the destitute in that neighborhood, and returned on Wednesday evening. His Excellency went by the way of Tryon and Bedeque, lunched at the residence of John Marshal, Esq., DeSable, inspected the improvements in progress on his model Farm, and his valuable importation of Live Stock from England; drove through the beautiful settlements of DeSable, Crapaud, Tryon and Seven Mile Bay, to the residence of Joseph Pope, Esq. at Bedeque, where, in the absence of Mr. Pope, he was hospitably entertained by his son, Mr. James Pope. On the following morning His Excellency continued his journey through the fertile and picturesque settlement of Bedeque, and was met at Walker’s by a numerous deputation of gentlemen who escorted him to St. Eleanors. Upon approaching Travellers Rest, a large display of flags was observed waving in the wind on the tops of the houses; and on entering the settlement he was received with the cheers of the people, and a discharge of firearms; a triumphal arch was also erected across the road for His Excellency to pass through."14

EmigrationHe emigrated in 1821 from ScotlandG. Robert is listed in the Patrons Directory in the 1880 Meacham Atlas as having settled in New Annan. In 1821 he would have been a young lad of 10 years. If we can accept this date as accurate, it lends credence to my theory that his father emigrated at least one year before.9
MarriageHe married Elizabeth Cairns daughter of Thomas Cairns and Agnes Wilson, on 6 March 1834 in St. John's Anglican Church, St. Eleanors, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, 46.419983, -63.811033G. WitnessHe was a witness at the marriage of Peter Schurman and Janet Cairns on 15 June 1847 in the United Church, North Bedeque, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, 46.36518, -63.72410G.13

CensusHe appeared on the census in 1861 as Head of Household in Lot 19, New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, 46.41978, -63.70972G.

Robert was listed as a farmer and a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Lower Provinces. The proprietor was Andrew T. Todd, with 30 years expired on a lease of 999 years. Land was leased at the rate of £1 per acre per year. Of the 100 acres, 60 were arable and of 2nd quality. In the year up to the 1861 census they grew 50 bushels of wheat, 50 bushels of barley, 400 bushels of oats, 50 bushels of buckwheat, 600 bushels of potatoes, 50 bushels of turnips and 6 tons of hay. They weaved 20 yards of fulled cloth, 40 yards of non-fulled cloth and made 100 lbs. of butter. They owned 3 horses, 6 cattle, 14 sheep and 10 hogs.

In the household were two people born in Scotland (Robert and Betsy), 1 in the British provinces (Ann Bramble), and 6 born on P.E.I. By age, there was 1 male under 5 (George Price), 2 females and 1 male between 5 and 16 (Jessie, Elizabeth, Isabella and Thomas - should be 3 females), 1 female between 16 & 20 (Mary), 1 male between 21 & 45 (David), 1 female and 1 male between 45 & 60 (Betsy and Robert), and 1 female over 60 (Ann Bramble). Ann B. was already married in 1855. William James had died in 1856. Margaret H. was already married in 1859.19

AppointOn 1 July 1878 Robert Walker was appointed the first Postmaster in New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, CanadaG.21
Biographical NoteRobert is listed in the 1880 Meacham Atlas. In the Lot 19 section he is shown as living in New Annan, was a Post Master and farmer. Nativity: Scotland. Date of Settlement: 1821. If this date is accurate it supports my theory that his father David might have emigrated alone and settled the property in New Annan before bringing his family.9
CensusHe appeared on the census in 1881 as Head of Household in Lot 19, New Annan, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada, 46.41978, -63.70972G. Included in the household were Robert's wife Elizabeth (Cairns), son George Price Walker, and grandson Ewen Jamieson (son of Ann Bramble Walker and William Jamieson). Robert was a farmer, living on the original homestead of David Walker and Margaret Hetherington.Note: In the LDS and Ancestry.ca transcriptions Robert's brother John was incorrectly placed in the household of Robert. Examination of the original microfilm clearly shows that John was head of his own household.22

DeathMargret Walker died on 30 July 1825, Her death entry in the John Walker Family Bible states that she was "Aged five years and three months". The date on her marker is "July 30th 1826", which does not match this age. Oral history says that she died during the voyage from Scotland to Prince Edward Island, but there are no records to confirm this.4
Alt-DeathAn alternate death date is on 30 July 1826. The year 1826 is on her tombstone. However, this is likely incorrect as her namesake, Margaret, was born 4 November 1825.5
