Obituary: "Kensington today mourns the passing of one of its most highly respected citizens, Mr. J. Melbourne Laird, who passed suddenly away this morning about five o'clock from a heart attack at the age of 69 years.
Mr. Laird for many years owned one of the largest farms in Kelvin, later moving to Kensington where his wife, who was formerly Etta Walker, passed away. He later married Etta Jardine, who survives him.
Mr. Laird was a man of pleasing personality and endeared himself to everyone. For many years he was Mayor of Kensington, which position he filled faithfully and well, and his passing is deeply mourned by the large circle of friends and relatives.
Besides his sorrowing widow, he leaves one son, Harold, on the homestead in Kelvin; Hattie, Mrs. Robert McDonald, Kensington; two step-daughters, Mrs. Alex. Tullich, and Miss Myra, Swampscott, Mass., besides a number of grandchildren.
The funeral will take place Monday from the United Church, Kensington at 2 p.m. Rev. B. C. Salter will conduct the services. Interment People's Cemetery."3,1
|
| Funeral | The funeral was held on 21 January 1940 in the United Church, Kensington, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, CanadaG,
"The United Church at Kensington was packed to overflowing yesterday when friends from far and near gathered to pay respect to the memory of one of nature's nobleman, the late J. Melbourne Laird. A man of sterling qualities he was for many years vice-president of the Maritime Livestock Breeders' Association. He was also a very keen horseman and in his younger life was a consistent winner of livestock prizes at the Island all eastern Canada exhibitions.
Since his retirement from farming in Kelvin, Mr. Laird has maintained a large fox ranch in Kensington. Mr. Laird was mayor of the town for a number of years. He held the position as superintendent of the Sabbath School for a long period and was an Elder for the church. In all these capacities he gave his best, never thinking of self when he saw another in need.
His pastor, Rev. B. C. Salter, conducted the service and took for his text Hebrews 11:1 --"He being Dead Yet Speaketh." Mr. Salter was assisted by Rev. W. O. Road of the Presbyterian Church and Rev. G. N. Somers of the Margate United Charge. Lieut. Roscoe Walker sang very feelingly "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" Other hymns sung were "The Lord's My Shepherd," "Peace Perfect Peace" and "Rock of Ages." The pallbearers were James Jardine, Gordon Glover, Charles Taylor, Wm. Woodside, W. L. Cotton and Hugh Morrison. Interment was in the People's Cemetery, Kensington. The beautiful flowers bore silent testimony to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Wreaths included one from the citizens of the town of Kensington and the Session of the United Church."3,8
