BirthCapt. Gideon Palmer was born on 29 October 1749.1
Biographical Note

Gideon was a lieutenant in Delancey's Corps (another name for the Westchester County Loyalists), and became a Captain in the Westmorland County Militia. For a time, according to W.C. Milner's account of the early history of Dorchester, Gideon Palmer and Titus Knapp had been in business together at Fort Cumberland, but Palmer sold out his share of the business and moved to Dorchester; but the account also says that he lived "when he first came with the Loyalists at Green Hill, Westmorland Point". (These notes were extracted from The Journal, St. John, N.B., year unknown)

There is a dress sword on display in Jones House, King's Landing Historical Settlement, near Kingsclear, N.B., although the true origin of the sword is not known. The sword was won at the estate auction of Arlie Palmer by the Kings Landing Historical Settlement. Arlie claimed that the sword was originally owned by Gideon Palmer of Dorchester, New Brunswick, and that Gideon was the father of Marcus Palmer of Queens County. There has never been found any evidence that Gideon ever visited the Palmers of Hampstead, Queens County, New Brunswick. Gideon had a son named Marcus, and he has been confused with the Queens County Marcus, most notably in print by Othniel Merritt.2

LivingHe was living of New York. A native of Westchester Co., New York, Palmer lived on Frog's Neck. He joined the British on Long Island in 1776, and served afterwards as a lieutenant in the Westchester Refugees. Palmer settled after the war in Westmorland Co., New Brunswick, and estimated his loss at £300 sterling. He was awarded £20 sterling.3
MarriageHe married Catherine Harper daughter of Christopher Harper and Elizabeth Leppington, in Westmorland County, New BrunswickG.1
WitnessCapt. Gideon Palmer witnessed the Warrant to Survey of Stephen Seaman, Sr., in 1785. Warrant to Survey, Surveyor's Report. Stephen Seaman and others, The Westchester Loyalists. The Surveyor's Certificate shows a Draft Grant: 31,750 acres. Cobequid Road, the road from Fort Cumberland to Fort Belcher, on the eastern side. Bounded in part by the northern boundary line of Londonderry, County of Cumberland. The following names appear on the Draft Grant: not all listed here, but do include Stephen Seaman, Ezekiah Seaman, John Crawford, Jacamiah Seaman and Gideon Palmer.4
DeathCapt. Gideon Palmer died on 6 October 1824 in Saint John, New BrunswickG. "Palmer, Gideon. A coroner of Westmorland County, New Brunswick. Died at St. John, in 1824, aged seventy-five."5
BurialHe was buried in the Rural Cemetery, Dorchester, Westmorland County, New BrunswickG.1,6

Note

John "cut down trees, cleared the land, raised cattle and crops, built mills, logged, stream drove and lumbered, built at least one vessel, was farmer, lumberman, miller, fisherman, sailor, trader, shipmaster and soldier", but "had never made grindstones", one of the favourite occupations of Westmorland County in the early days where grindstones were a measure of value.

His reminiscences included ordering of the Dorchester militia to St. John in 1813 to replace the 104th, which had marched to Quebec. "We marched the first day to the Bend (the Bend of the Pedicodiac, Moncton later). There was no road - only a pathway marked by blazed trees through the woods. There were no settlements - only an occasional house, where now there are towns and villages. We had a hard march through deep snow, made more difficult by the scarcity of provisions along the route. The next month February, 30 volunteers were called for to do garrison duty at Fort Cumberland until the artillery arrived from Halifax. I was one of them. We came up to Shepody in a schooner, of which Thomas Brewster was master and owner. John Calhoun set us over to Belliveau and we trudged home, without food or drink and nearly perished from the cold." (Extracted from the St. John Journal, year unknown.)
