| Note | David Walter Hulet: Written by Dorothy Acker Hulet, Jul 1996, for aprogram at the LDS girls camp in the Dillon area. 'A young girl stood in the station watching as the last train pulledslowly away. She was scarcely nineteen or twenty years old, her facetear stained, her clothes rumpled from staying up all night so as not tomiss a single moment of their last hours together. Her bridegroom of amere 20 days was on that train heading for points unknown. She, ofnecessity, was left behind. It was 1945, she a 'war bride' and he was a US Airman in the service ofhis country which was still at war after four long years. Her story wasplayed out all over the nation, small variations but essentially thesame. He'd promised to be 'Home For Christmas' or that 'I'll Be SeeingYou In All the Old Familiar Places.' Statistics were against him. 292,000 young men would lose their lives, three times that many would bewounded and show scars for the rest of their days, lost arms and legstorn cruelly away by hidden mines on the battle fields of the world. The war was global, it spanned the world with the Allies (United States,Great Britain, the USSR and China) against the Axis Powers (Germany,Italy and Japan.) Victory for the Allies had been declared in NorthAfrica, Sicily, and finally in Germany where Adolph Hitler had (up tothis time) reigned supreme. But Japan still had to be reckoned with. The war in the Far East was far flung and new names cropped up in oureveryday lives, names like Okinawa, Guam, Iwo Jima and Attu Island;Hiroshima and Nagasaki. New things happened in our everyday lives like rationing of food, clothing, shoes, gasoline, tires and anything that could not be spared bythe war effort. Plastics became a substitute for metal; Daylight Saving Time became afact of life; Tupperware a household word. Women invaded the workplacesince all eligible men were serving their country in a long and drearywar. Patriotism was sparked and every facet of our lives went into the 'WarEffort.' Servicemen were clothed and fed at the expense of thecivilian. The armies rolled on rubber tires in metal vehicles, civilianswalked or pooled rides. Skies were filled with new fighter planes. Theseas were blanketed with warships. Tonite, we are showcasing entertainment for the serviceman. USO showscropped up where ever there were bases. The United Service Organizationwas interested only in the comfort of the serviceman, they fed him andserved him drinks, they told jokes and stories of home. They sang to himand danced for his toe-tapping pleasure. 'I'll Be Seeing You' 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy' 'Sentimental Journey' ,the stirring 'Marine's Hymn' and 'Anchors Aweigh' became our theme songs.Listen now as we take you into the wonderful world of music during this, the time of World War II.'. |

| Name | Dorothy 'Dottie' Ellen Acker was also known as Dorothy 'Dottie' Ellen Hulet. |
| Biographical Note | Dorothy Ellen Acker was born between Scotia and Greely, Nebraska. Her parents were elderly when she was born; she was the sixth born child out of seven. She was raised with strict rules and that good old fashioned upbringing. She lived through the depression, became a Grammar schoolteacher at age 19 and attended business college at Grand Island, Neb., where she met and married Dave Hulet. She was a WW II bride that lived with her husband for a month before he was shipped off to Guam, in the South pacific, and then she took a bus to Mesa, Prairie County, Arizona to live with his family whom she had never met before. The Hulets were prosperous dairy farmers that also grew hay, cotton and water melons. They lived as a clan moving all three brothers' families together with the parents whenever a move was made. In June of 1966 they all moved into Dillon, Montana, where Dorothy resides today. Cattle, hay and wheat were their main sources of income. Dorothy has supported herself and her children over the years with bookkeeping jobs. She worked for JC Penny’s for close 20 years and still, at the age of 70, holds down two part-time bookkeeping jobs. She loves music, sings alto, taught herself to play the piano, when young, and now plays the organ as well. She's often asked to play at weddings and funerals alike. Most of her good friends are 20 to 30 years younger than she, which says she’s very young at heart. This bio was done April, 1995. Daddy’s (her father) nick name for Dorothy was Sweetie. Daddy (her husband) nick named her Dottie. |

Dengue Fever, seasonal viral infection characterized by fever, headache, extreme pain in the joints and muscles, and skin rash. A more serious butless common form of the disease, dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), maycause severe and fatal internal bleeding. Dengue fever and DHF are causedby any of four different viruses, and are transmitted from one person toanother by the female mosquito of two species of the genus Aedes.Outbreaks of the disease usually occur in the summer when the mosquitopopulation is at its peak. The infection cannot be transmitted directlyfrom person to person and not all people who are bitten necessarilycontract the disease. Dengue fever and DHF occur in many tropical andsub-tropical areas in Asia, Africa, Central and South America. Isolatedcases in the United States are usually the result of tourists bringingthe disease back with them from travelling abroad. The incubation period (time between infection and onset of symptoms) ofdengue fever is five to eight days. The fever typically runs its coursein six to seven days, but convalescence is usually slow. Treatment fordengue fever is directed at reducing symptoms. The incubation period of DHF is 2 to 7 days. In the early stages thesymptoms are very similar to those of dengue fever. The second stagesymptoms include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The onset ofhemorrhagic symptoms rapidly follows-bleeding nose and gums, bruisingeasily, and sometimes internal bleeding. Treatment for these symptoms isa standard fluid rehydration therapy in order to maintain blood pressure. If circulatory failure is not reversed, shock and death will follow. DHFis most common among children under the age of 15. Ten percent ofchildhood cases of DHF are fatal. The most effective preventive measure is the use of mosquito repellent. As yet no successful vaccine for dengue fever has been developed.According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue fever and DHFare among the most rapidly increasing insect-borne illnesses today.Several factors are believed to contribute to the wide spread of denguefever. Inadequate water and waste treatment facilities, along withinsufficient pest control measures, promote the rapid increase ofmosquito populations. In addition, dwindling public health resourcescannot keep up with the needs of growing urban populations that aresusceptible to infection. 'Dengue Fever,' Microsoft(R) Encarta(R) 97 Encyclopedia.
