Note.3
BirthCerdic, of Wessex, was born in 467, in Saxony, Northern GermanyG.
NoteCerdic, a patriarch of royalty in Saxony, landed in Hampshire in 495 and in 519 gained a victory at Charford. He was first crowned King of the West Saxons, when, as it is reported, the legendary King Arthur, who had his castle on the steep coast of Cornwall, yielded to him the section of land now known as Hampshire and Somerset. In 520, being unable to extend his rule west of the Avon and defeated at Badbury, County Dorset, Cerdic withdrew. Ten years later he conquered the Isle of Wight. He died in 534. Cerdic is said to be the founding figure of the West Saxon dynasty. However, much of this is obscure and not documented, subject to dispute by history scholars. There was no secure chronicle in the 6th century. (Wurts) Source: ancestry.com
The Paternal Ancestry of Homer Beers James in 495.
Fact 1In 508 a victory over the Celts by Cerdic of Wessex established Saxon control over the New Forest area, although the Celts and Saxons were still contesting the region north of Southampton well into the 520s. (Extracted from "Historical Atlas of the Celtic World".)4
Fact 2Between 519 and 534 the kingdom of Wessex was founded in A.D. 519 by a chieftain called Cerdic, who came to Britain from Germany in 494/495. Cerdic ruled from 519 to 534.1,5
Fact 3In 530 he conquered the Isle of Wight, and following his death in 534, his grandson, Cynric, succeeded him. Cynric probed north into the modern county of Hampshire. (Extracted from "Historical Atlas of the Celtic World", page 128) in 530.6
DeathHe died in 534 in the Kingdom of WessexG.7

----------------------------

Shropshire, England families that possibly contained our Benjamin Hitchcock

Richard Hitchcock m. 20 July 1783 to Mary Knoke(Knox) at Stottesden and Farlow, Shropshire , England. Richard and Mary's children: 1. Mary Hitchcock christened 29 August 1784 2. Benjamin Hitchcock christened 31 May 1789, 3. Richard Hitchcock christened 29 January 1792 died 2 October 1795 at Stottesden and Farlow.

John Hitchcock m. 4 May 1784 to Dorothy Milner (christened 28 August 1763 daughter of Thomas and Dorothy Milner). Marriage at Stottesden and Farlow Parish, Shropshire, England.

John and Dorothy's children: 1. Sarah Hitchcock chr. 13 July 1784 Stottesden and Farlow. 2. Thomas Hitchcock chr. 6 August 1785 Stottesden and Farlow. 3. Ann Hitchcock chr. 20 January 1788 Corely Parish , Shropshire. 4. Benjamin Hitchcock chr. 18 October 1789 Corely Parish. 5 John Hitchcock chr. 20 or 2 February 1794 Corely Parish. 6. Elizabeth Hitchcock chr 31 July 1796 Corely Parish. 7. Susanna Hitchcock chr. 14 April 1799 Corely. 8. Richard Hitchcock chr. 13 September 1801 Billingsley, Shropshire. 9. Amy Hitchcock chr. 3 April 1803 Billingsley. 10. Cicely Hitchcock chr 16 March 1806 Billingsley.

Military records for our Benjamin Hitchcock show Bridgnorth, Shropshire as his place of birth. Bridgnorth is about seven miles from Stottesden. Corely Parish is also a short distance from Stottesden. Could our Benjamin be the son of John and Dorothy ? Perhaps, they are of the same age. However, we tend to believe that our Benjamin is the son of Richard and Mary. I speculate that following the custom of naming first born children after parents or grandparents, James the first son could have been named for the father of Cecelia. The second son Benjamin for his father and then Richard for his grandfather and Mary Ann for her grandmother Mary Knox.

Researchers have not been able to document the parentage of both Benjamin and Cecelia. A record of their marriage has not surface either, so far. In the Canadian Census of 1851 Cecelia, states that she was born in England. Their son James gives Ireland as his place of birth. In The Canadian Census of 1891, Walker Hitchcock their grandson, gives British West Indies as the place of birth of his father James. Family oral history speaks of Cecelia as being of Irish descent. Perhaps, someday we will uncover documents to support our belief that the Benjamin, son of Richard and Mary may be claimed as our own and that we can establish where and when both Cecelia and James were born..

Bridgnorth is a picturesque town situated in Shropshire on the river Severn, a short distance form the border with Wales. It is an ancient town, said to have been founded by a daughter of King Alfred. A large portion of the castle, built shortly after the Conquest still remains. It is a mining as well as an agricultural region. Early on, Bridgnorth had establishments for the manufacturing of carpets and tanneries as well as malthouses. Today, Bridgnorth and surroundings has an active tourist trade, being one of the most picturesque areas of England. You can visit by internet by searching Google.ca and entering the name of the town. Interesting !

Benjamin enlisted in the army around 1810. In 1812, he enlisted in the Royal Cardigan Militia, which in 1812 was stationed at Limerick, Ireland. On 28 June 1812, as a private, he transferred to 6th Company, 2nd Battalion, 36th Regiment of Foot, which was stationed at Blatchington, Sussex, England. This regiment's first battalion was an important part of several peninsular battles against Napoleon's forces. If Benjamin was with this battalion, then he would have been present at the costly victory of July 1812 at Salamance, Spain. He deserted on 24 August 1812. There is no record of his military service for the next eighteen months, although one might assume that he spent part, if not all of this time in prison for deserting. Little is know about Benjamin's desertion; why, where, and for how long. Once back in custody, he would have been court-martialed. As with many deserters in this period, his sentence was to serve in the unhealthy West Indies.

On either the 15th or the 20th of February, Private Benjamin Hitchcock transferred from the 36th Regiment to the Royal West India Rangers. In these records, he is described as about 5 feet 8 and three quarters inches tall, of slender form; fair complexion; with hazel or grey eyes and light brown hair.

From February 1814 to June 1815, he was stationed at Trinidad. From then, until March 1816 , he was at Guadeloupe; at least part of that time as a member of Captain Jack's Company(or 1st Rifle Company). From then until February, 1817, when he was transferred to 8th Company, he was at St. Lucia. From March until June, 1817, he was at St. Vincent. The Regiment then moved to St. Kitts, where on the 25th July 1818 he was promoted to Corporal. In June 1819, the Regiment was transferred to Saint John New Brunswick. They arrive on 10th of June aboard the Buerdon, Aleona and the Star under the command of Lieut. Col. Lavicourt. Here the regiment was disbanded. Those who were content to stay and settle on the Saint John River were allotted land; some farming implements, a proportion of seeds, and three years provisions. Benjamin Hitchcock, who had a wife and one child (James) at this time, was one of forty soldiers who choose to stay and settle in Ranger Settlement.1
