NameThomas de Holland, 1st Earl of Kent, was also known as Thomas Holland, of Broughton.2
BirthHe was born About 1314.3
Biographical NoteThomas Holland was an English nobleman and military commander in the Hundred Years' War. He was from a gentry family in Holland, Lancashire, England.3
MarriageHe married Joan Plantagenet, 4th Countess of Kent, daughter of Edmund Plantagenet, of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent, and Margaret Wake, 3rd Baroness Wake of Liddell,, in 1340, he secretly married the 12 year old Joan of Kent, without first getting royal consent for couples of their rank. The following winter, 1340 or 1341, while Thomas Holland was in Europe, her family forced her into a marriage with William Montacute. Several years later, Thomas returned from the Crusades, when his marriage to Joan became general knowledge. Thomas appealed to the Pope for the release of Joan from the home of her second husband. He also confessed the secret marriage to the king. In 1349 Pope Clement VI annulled Joan's marriage to William Montacute, and sent her back to Thomas Holland, with whom she lived for the next eleven years. They had four known children, before Thomas died in 1360.2

Roger de Beaumont1

M, #97915, b. About 1015, d. 29 November 1094
Bayeux Tapestry, depicting Roger de Beaumont with beard, William the Conqueror seated to his left, and Bishop Odo, half-brother of William, to the left of William, blessing the food at the feast table. The Bayeux Tapestry was created in the 11th century to commemorate the invasion of England by William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, and his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The tapestry is 230 feet long and about 20" wide. It is on permanent display at the museum in Bayeux, France. Scanned from The Bayeux Tapestry, by David Wilson.

NameRoger de Beaumont was also known as Barbatus or La Barbe Beaumont.1,2
Biographical NoteAccording the author James Planché (1796-1880), Roger de Beaumont "was the noblest, the wealthiest, and the most valiant seigneur of Normandy", a cousin of William, Duke of Normandy. He has been described as one of the "greatest barons in Normandy". Although he was portrayed in the Bayeux Tapestry seated next to William the Conqueror at a feast table, he did not actually participate in the Battle of Hastings, as he was considered too old (he was all of 51 years). He was left in Normandy as chief advisor to Duchess Maud. However, he did contribute to William's ambitious cause by providing at his own expense sixty vessels to transport Norman troops across the English Channel. Roger's eldest sons, Robert and Henry, fought at Hastings, as seen in several accounts. As a result, these sons were rewarded with rich lands in England, and both were made English earls by the sons of the Conqueror. Roger de Beaumont first came to England with the Conqueror late in 1067. Such a late arrival after the Battle of Hastings did not preclude him from sharing the spoils of the victory. He was granted lands in Dorset and Gloucestershire.1,3

BirthShe was born on 29 September 1328. Joan was of the House of Plantagenet.1,4
Biographical NoteJoan, 4th Countess of Kent, known to history as The Fair Maid of Kent, was the first Princess of Wales. The French chronicler, John Froissart, referred to Joan as "the most beautiful woman in all the realm of England, and the most loving'.1
MarriageShe married Thomas de Holland, 1st Earl of Kent, son of Robert Holland and Maud la Zouche, in 1340, he secretly married the 12 year old Joan of Kent, without first getting royal consent for couples of their rank. They had four known children, before Thomas died in 1360.1
