Deacon Daniel P. Dyer was adescendant on thefemale side by marriage from Roger Williams, andAbby Williams was adirect descendant from the same worthy=William H. attended the districtschool, a private school inProvidence and [p.366] Kingston academy. Hewas educated as a farmerand nurseryman, his father being proprietor ofthe Dyer nursery. In1836 he became interested in the propagation ofmulberry trees tofurnish food for silkworms and in the production andpreparation ofsilk for the manufacturers. He conducted this business oneyear inProvidence, R.I., and three years in Fredericksburg, Va. In 1840hewas captain of the state militia, and in the Dorr rebellion took=withthe law and order party. In 1861 he joined the Federal army andwas maderecruiting officer, his age exempting him from active fieldservice. Heserved in this capacity for two years. In 1875, on thedeath of hisfather, he became sole proprietor of the nursery and=on Pocasset Neck. Hewas married May 1, 1836, to Mary Groton,daughter of Christopher and Sarah(Williams) Tanner. She was a=descendant in the sixth generation fromRoger Williams and was bom=married in the house built by Roger Williamsfor his son. Of theirsons, William S. was an officer in the civil war andsubsequentlyIndian agent in Dakota. Daniel Pierce was a soldier in theFederalarmy during the civil war and succeeded to the management ofthenursery business and Edmund Tanner became joint proprietor withhisbrother, Daniel of Mulberry Grove, on the death of theirfather.Captain Dyer died at Pocasset, R.I., Feb. 3, 1899. He was in the recuiting service in the Civil War in 1861 for theFederalArmy.

The farm originally belonged to herancestor, Joseph2 Williams (Roger1). A part of the farm is now the RogerWilliams Park of Providence. Christopher8 served in the Rhode Islandmilitia in the war of 1812. [Weaver Genealogy, p.104] Tradition has it that Christopher Tanner served in the War of 1812, andone of his descendants, Major C. D. Parkhurst, is a life member of theSociety of the War of 1812 on his record established by tradition and theaffidavit of a daughter of Christopher, Mary Gorton Dyer of Cranston, R.I. Sarah Williams, wife of Christopher Tanner, was a direct descendant fromRoger Williams. She was born in Cranston. She never remarried, but died awidow, and is buried in Pocasset cemetery, which is on the farm of the'Dyer Nursery.'
