| Note | Of Plymouth, Salem, Mass., Providence, R.I. Abridged Compendium, Frederick Virkus (CD 113) ============================================== Memoirs of the Wilkinson Family Author: Israel Wilkinson This book contains the history and genealogy of the Wilkinson family ofRhode Island. Bibliographic Information: Wilkinson, Israel. Memoirs of the WilkinsonFamily. Davis & Penniman. Jacksonville, Ill. 1869. Pages 3-6 RHODE ISLAND was settled by Roger Williams, a native of Wales, who wasborn 1598, and was liberally educated under the patronage of Sir EdwardCoke. He embarked for America, Feb. 5, 1631, and went to Salem to preachin connexion with Rev. Mr. Skelton. His favorite theme was liberty ofconscience in religious matters, and that civil magistrates as such haveno power in the church, and that Christians as such are subject to nolaws or control, but those of King Jesus. These doctrines offended therulers of Massachusetts Colony, and he was banished by sentence of theircourt. In the winter of 1636, he came to Seacunck, now Seekonk, and beganhis plantation, but was ordered away by the Governor, as being stillwithin the limits of their jurisdiction. He departed thence, and crossedthe river, and stopped near a spring, which is called Roger Williams'Spring to this day. Here he began to build, and, in recognition of God'smerciful care, gave the name of Providence to his settlement. He hadpreviously married Mary (???) For about fifty (47) years he lived in Providence, and in 1683--being 85years of age--he died, and was buried on his own lot (No. 38) betweenBenefit and North Main Streets, near the spring which still bears hisname. His house stood on the east side of North Main St., and his familyburial ground was just in the rear of the carriage house of SullivanDorr. For many years his grave was forgotten, and could not beidentified--the mounds having become leveled with the surrounding earthand covered with green sward. Z. Allen, Esq., in his 'Memorial of RogerWilliams,' says: 'Historical records state that the death of RogerWilliams occurred in the year 1683, and that he was buried with martialhonors. The smoke of the musketry, temporarily hovering in the air overhis grave, formed as permanent a mark of respect as was ever bestowed tohonor it. Not even a rough stone was set up to designate the spot.' =============================================== Roger Williams of Providence, RI: There were several 'Roger Williams' living in New England in earlyhistory. This genealogy deals with the Roger who settled in Rhode Islandin 1636. He was the son of James and Alice (Pemberton) Williams of England, whohad four children: Sydrach, Catherine, Roger and Robert. His father James(son of Mark and Agnes (Audley) Williams, was a merchant tailor of London- his rank next below gentry. His mother Alice, was the daughter ofRobert Pemberton whose wife was Catherine Stokes, sister of Roger Stokes. The Pembertons were landed gentry. The great fire of London destroyed thechurch in which the records of birth and baptism of the family were kept. Roger was born at the beginning of the 17th century, in the time of JamesI of England. He married Mary Barnard Dec. 15, 1629 in High Lever Church,Essex, England, and they arrived in Boston in 1631 on the ship Lyon.Various historians have told of his journeyings to Salem, Plymouth, backto Salem, to Seekonk, Massachusetts, and finally settling in Providence,Rhode Island. He was the father of many descendants. This book contains the genealogical records of the Roger Williams FamilyAssociation - collected during the past fifty years. It is not a completegenealogy. By this public printing of our records we hope many peoplewill be enabled to establish their lines of descent from Roger Williams, and that we may be notified of additional data, to be published at somefuture time. We are indebted to many for material given us, especially to Miss EailyH. Paine for her work on early records and to Mrs. Annie Irons for valuedhelp. Compiled and published by: Mrs. C. W. (Bertha Williams Anthony) and Mrs. C. H. (Harriett WoodWeeden) 23 Oakland Avenue 66 Lincoln Avenue Cranston 10, R. I. Rivarside 15, R. I. July 15, 1949 A monument on Prospect Terrace, Providence, was dedicated June 29, 1939by the Roger Williams Memorial Association. This association wasorganized in 1850 and five years later Stephen Randall made a gift of81,000 to be used as a nuclous for the erection of a monument. This fundwas increased to $45,000 in 1936, to which was added a stateappropriation of $23,000 and other gifts, which made the projectpossible. The 14-foot statue, weighing ten tons was hewn from finegrained blue white granite from Westerly, R. I. It is set between twohuge granite pylons, forming the sides of a rectangular arch. The costwas about $70,000. |

Thomas Willett and Mary Brown were married July 6, 1636, and thirteen children were born to them. His ancient house at Wannamoisett,(now Riverside, R. Willett until it was rebuilt in anew house on the same spot by Col. H. Anthony Dyer, about 1900. Johnston, RI USA, beth@@the-hurds.com,http://www.the-hurds.com History of the state of Rhode Island and Providence PlantationsBiographical NY: The American Historical Society, Inc. 1920 pp. 423 - 424: 'COLONEL HEZEKIAH ANTHONY DYER -- In Rhode Island, Colonel H. Anthony Dyer, placed by the leading critical authorities among the ablest exponents of landscape art, is known and appreciated not only for eminence among American artists but for a type of citizenship of constant service for the public good. Colonel Dyer is a member of the family of proud place in Rhode Island and New England history, and the chapter written in his day and generation, adding achievement in a new field, is well added to the family record. Colonel H. Anthony Dyer, son of Governor Elisha and Nancy Anthony (Viall)Dyer, was born in Providence, R. I., October 28, 1872. He obtained his general education in St. Paul's School and Brown University, leaving the former institution in 1890, and graduating from the latter in 1894, with the degree of Bachelor of Science. He followed art study in France, Italy, and Holland, and has made landscape painting his field of endeavor. From1897 to 1900 he was executive secretary to his father, then governor of Rhode Island, and was aide-de-camp on his staff, with the rank of Colonel, during the same period, throughout the Spanish War. Numerous pictures by Mr. Dyer are on permanent exhibition in the Corcoran Gallery, of Washington, D. C., the Rhode Island School of Design, and the Providence Art Club, while many of his paintings are in private collections. He is universally regarded as a representative American painter in water color of landscape subjects, a talented artist whose work has attracted wide attention and strongly favorable comment. He isa member and ex-president of the Providence Water Color Club, member and from 1904 to 1914 president of the Providence Art Club, and a former member of the Boston Water Color Society, and the Boston Art Club. He is well known as a lecturer on art and travel topics, and fills many engagements of this nature throughout the East. In 1919 he was honoured with the degree of A. M. from Brown University, and he was also made an honourary member of Phi Beta Kappa. An inherited love for political activity and party affairs has given him keen interest in the political situation in his native State. He has never entered public life as an office holder, but from 1916 to 1919 was president of the Republican Club of Rhode Island, a loyal supporter of his party, and highly regarded in party councils. Colonel Dyer was chairman of the speakers' bureau for the Food Administration of Rhode Island early in the United States' participation in the war, and was afterwards made, by the Council of Defense, chairman of the speakers' bureau for the State of Rhode Island, the two later being merged. He was appointed by Governor Beeckman a director of the Community Councils of Defense for Rhode Island and became a member of the Council for Rhode Island of the 'four-minutemen', working in cooperation with the Bureau of Public Information. He was also director of speakers of the United War Work Activities campaign, and during the war he gave without limit of his services and ability in the publicity campaigns for the various agencies of victory, the government, social service, and welfare organizations. His previous experience as a lecturer stood him in good stead and he was particularlyeffective in addressing large audiences. Throughout all of his war work he enjoyed the confidence of the people of his State to a marked degree, and his leadership met with a ready response in every relation of the war. His work, since the victory of the allied cause, continues in his chairmanship for Rhode Island of the Fatherless Children of France, a philanthropic organization whose name bespeaks its purpose. Colonel Dyer is a junior warden of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, and is an active worker in his denomination, a member of the standing committee of the Episcopal church of Rhode Island, and in 1919 a deputy from Rhode Island to the general convention of the Episcopal church at Detroit. By that body he was appointed to the Army and Navy Commission. He is a member of the Society of Colonial Wars, the Hope Club, and the Rotary Club. His fraternity, to which he was elected during his college years,is the Sigma Chapter of Psi Upsilon. Colonel Dyer married, in 1899, Charlotte Osgood Tilden, daughter of the late Henry and Isabel (Congdon) Tilden, and they are the parents of one daughter, Nancy Anthony, who is studying art to keep up the family tradition.' to see some images by Nancy A.
