NoteHe prepared for college and graduated with honors at Yale College, in the class of 1803. He then entered the law office of Hotchkiss & Simons, at Clinton, New York, and in due course was admitted to the bar. In 1807 he opened an office in New Hartford, New York, and in 1811 removed to Manlius, New York, forming a partnership with James O. Wattles. He continued to practice law the rest of his life with marked ability and success. He was a member of the Baptist church in his younger days, but afterward became a communicant of the Protestant Episcopal church and fora number of years was vestryman and warden of the church at Manlius.
