- Cecelia (Celia) Hitchcock, daughter of Benjamin Hitchcock and Cecelia Collins, Married James Higgins of Higginsville (Musquodoboit), near Halifax, Nova Scotia, 26 November 1844 at Andover, New Brunswick.
At the marriage of Benjamin Hitchcock (2) and Catherine Dee at Andover, 3 August 1846, the witnesses were James and Celia Higgins. James and Celia are not listed in Canadian Census records of 1851 for the Grand Falls, Andover region. I found them in the Census records of 1851 for Middle Musquodoboit, Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia, Reel # M-3138, Canadian Archives, Ottawa. For the same region in 1871 they are listed with three children; John Robert, James Edward and Frederick.
James and Celia and family are not listed in the Census of 1881for this region. In the Census record for Drummond Parish, New Brunswick, we find James now a widow living in Drummond with sons, Edward, 21 yrs of age and Frederick, 19 yrs of age.
John Robert, 29 yrs is married to Sophia, 21 yrs and have two childred; Laura 2 yrs, and John E. 3 months old.
Apparently James and Celia moved back to New Brunswick with their family between 1872 and 1881.
Celia received a Land Grant of 100 acres, across the river from her parents, Benjamin and Cecelia. In 1976, James received a Land Grant of 100 acres next to his wife's 100 acres. Celia died between 1872 and the Census taken in 1881. Census Records for 1891, show James as 71 years of age in 1891, and residing as a lodger at the home of William Hamilton and Mary of Drummond, Victoria County, NB along with Samuel Hitchcock, 64 years of age and Jane Monteith 62 years of age. Samuel and Jane are registered as father and mother to the couple, head of household. Census of 1881 show Jane Monteith as a widow with children.
Celia and James' children married into families of the surrounding area, among them the McQuade and
Monteith families.
