- BIOGRAPHY: Came to Bethel in 1856 as a single man along with Pratts,Mitchells and Dyers. According to Deloris Golden 'John was born into alarge family whose circumstances were very poor. He did not finishschool, did not know his parents names or when he was born. His DeathCert. says he was born in 1836 and parents came from Ireland/Scotland.John left home before the age of 12. He first lived with variousneighbors as a helper on their farms and eventually travelled north tolumber camps and became a logger. He went as far north as Canada andMaine before coming back to Minnesota where he married MargaretDyer.After marriage they moved to Payette, Idaho. Life was not easy for thefamily. They lived in three rooms and a shed. On one side of the home wasa Chinese laundry and on the other side a vinegar factory. The back ofthe house was bordered by railroad tracks and a 'slew' '. CENSUS-IMMIGRATION: 1895 Census says he came to state 40 yrs, 3 mos. ago.MARRIAGE: 'History of Anoka Co.', p160; NOTE: The first wedding inBethel was John marrying Margaret Dyer. Their son John B.
