- He was born in Strachur, Argyleshire, Scotland, immigrating to Prince Edward Island in 1840 and settling in the Summerfield section of Springfield. In 1841, he married his neighbour, Christina Sinclair, a daughter of Peter and Mary (Crawford) Sinclair. Of their fourteen children, one died in infancy; Donald, Eliza, and Margaret Lydia died quite young; Mary married Thomas Frizzell; Catherine became the wife of William B. Donald; Christy Ann married Charles MacLean; Priscilla became a school teacher; Jane married Alexander Nicholson; Martha married Nathan MacFarlane; Peter purchased a farm in Graham's Road; Duncan made his home in Summerside; Hugh Alexander spent some time in the Klondike, later settling in Tacoma, Washington; Archibald Jr. took a commercial course at Business College before becoming successfully engaged in farming the homestead. He specialized in raising horses and cattle. At Ottawa, his Clydesdale stallion, ("Charming Lad" ) was awarded a gold medal as being the best bred horse in the Dominion. For a time, Archibald Jr. held the government appointment of Assayer of Weights and Measures. Near the turn of the century, he replaced the old Ferguson house with a larger residence where he and his sisters resided. The Fergusons were members of the Presbyterian Church, in which Archibald Sr. was an elder. He died April 1, 1892 and his wife, the following month. They were buried in the cemetery adjoining the church. Several of their children are also buried there. This information taken from the history of Springfield.
