- Obituary: This newspaper clipping (name of newspaper and date not recorded) was contributed by Louella Ryan of Island Falls, Maine: Houlton - Vaughn G. Bates, 67, died Tuesday at Caribou after a short illness. He was in Moro, October 28, 1896, son of Charles and Persia (Moody) Bates. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War I and World War II, as well as the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Katahdin Lodge of Masons; St. Aldemar Commandery; Anah Temple Shine; and the Fidelity Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Helen (Estabrook) Bates of Houlton; four brothers, Everard of Moro, Freeman and Adrian, both of Linneus, Philip of Niles, Michigan; one sister, Mrs. Helen Jane Mason, Riverside,California; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the Dunn Funeral Home here, Friday at 2p.m. with the Rev. Gordon Buzza officiating. Friends may call at thefuneral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in New Limerick Cemetery.
