The account below is found on page 310 in the book, 'One Room Rural Schools Of Crook County' SCHOOLS I TAUGHT: Ellen Morris Turner 'My first year of teaching was spent boarding with Egbert Flora McAmis on the Belle Fourche River. This was in 1930 and 1931, at the Belle School. There were eight pupils in the school; Velma McAmis, Eldon Nielsen and Malcolm Butcher in the sixth grade; and Irene McAmis and Lloyd Butcher in the eighth grade. I learned more than any of the pupils that year. Egbert and Flora charged me $25.00 a month to board my horse and me, and Egbert had him saddled and tied to the gatepost for me on frosty mornings. My next year was spent near Warren's Peak in the Dillon School, in 1931and 1932, with five pupils. Ellen Slaybaugh was in the fifth grade; Rex Dillon, Fern Slaybaugh and Clifford Slaybaugh in the sixth grade and Leon Dillon in the seventh grade. Pauline Dillon came to school each day and studied her high school correspondence course. I boarded with the Claude Dillon family and enjoyed Lottie's good cooking and enjoyable hospitality. The year 1932 - 1933 I attended Spearfish Normal in Spearfish, South Dakota, then taught the Lower Beaver Creek School during the year 1933and 1934, and boarded with Agnes and Elmer Engle. Their daughter,Roberta, taught the Dirks School and boarded there also. Those attending the Lower Beaver Creek School were Elizabeth Hardy in the fifth grade;Robert Vernon Wells, Rose and Doris Fletcher in the sixth grade and Jesse Voorhees in the seventh grade. Jesse's brother, Robert, came and studiedcorrespondence, taking his high school course. This concluded my teaching school experience as I married Harry Turner in March and we moved to Colorado in June as soon as school closed.
