- Lily May 'May' (Nilson) Gorsuch lived in Fairburn, Custer County, SouthDakota in 1978. May Nilson Gorsuch Funeral services for May Nilson Gorsuch, 84, were held July 18 atBehrens Mortuary in Rapid City. The Rev. Paul Lupkes officiated. Burialwas in Fairburn Cemetery. A memorial has been established. Gorsuch died July 15 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was bornMay 2, 1901, on a ranch near Eothen, Wyo., to Nils and Emma Nilson. sheattended school in Clayton Place near her home in Eothen. Gorsuchobtained a bachelor of science degree in teaching in 1921 from SpearfishNormal. Gorsuch had her first teaching job in Lander, Wyo. she also taughtin Rapid City, Fairburn, Pringle and Custer. In later years she workedwith the Wyoming School System teaching in Newcastle, Gas Camp,Darlington and Claraton. Gorsuch had retired. She married Raymond Gorsuch on June 1, 1924 at the Gorsuch Ranchnear Fairburn. They had lived in Piedmont, Hill City, Edgemont andFairburn. Gorsuch was a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma at Newcastle. Shejoined the Lutheran church in 1922, and was active in other churchesthroughout her life. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. E. L. (Emma Bell) HarbourMontrose, Colo., Mrs Bud (Evelyn) Sterns, Edgemont and Mrs. Jack (Ethel)Smith, Fairburn; and two sons, David Gorsuch, Rapid City and Roy Gorsuch,Newcastle, Wyo.; one sister, Elsie Rooms, Port Orchid, Wash.; onebrother, Roy Nilson, Hulett, Wyo.; 23 grandchildren and 26great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1978,one daughter, two granddaughters, three brothers and three sisters.
