Newspaper Announcement: "At Summerside, on the 25th at the residence of Mr. Robert Glover, his brother-in-law, Mr. John Cairns and old and respected inhabitant of Summerside, at the advanced age of 78 years. The deceased was born in Scotland, in the parish of Dumfries, in 1809, and when 16 years of age was enlisted at Carlyle for the 55th Regiment of Foot. He served in the Army nearly 17 years, when he discharged in consequence of a disease which he contracted from service in tropical climes and from loss of an eye by a bullet wound received in action...." [lengthy obituary].2
