| Note | Col. Marinus Stull, an early settler of Elkland, served in the War of 1812 from New York state and after the war settled in Elkland. On May 15th 1830 a battalion training was held on the south side of the Cowanesque river near the Elkland - Osceola boundary. Field officers on that day where Phillip Taylor, Colonel Marinus Stull, Captain Timothy Coates. The day was very cold and snow fell. Marinus Stull served as postmaster for the Elkland Post Office from Feb 25th 1830 to March 17th 1930. In the 1840's two sportsmen and gamblers came to Elkland with a fast race horse. They traveled from town to town racing their horse against local horses and they usually won and made a lot of money on bets. A man by the name of Taylor in Osceola had a very fast mare that had a colt shortly before these men came to Elkland. Taylor persuaded Col Marinus Stull to ride his horse in the race, which was to be from Elkland to the foot of Barney Hill. Stull refused to ride from west to east but would ride from east to west. The gamblers, not knowing about the colt, agreed. The mare thinking she was going to her colt, really did her best and won the race. The gamblers left Elkland wiser and much poorer. |

Mygrandmother, whose maiden name was Mary Bush, married a man by the nameof Wallis and had a family of four children, two boys and two girls.Later on Wallis was killed by the Indians and my grandmother marriedHancock, my grandfather. They had one son, Joseph Hancock, my father. Then Grandfather also was killed by the Indians and Grandmother was lefta widow the second time. When my father was sixteen years of age, heenlisted and served seven years in the Revolutionary War. He then marriedKatherine Baltimore, my mother, in Pennsylvania. From there they went toKentucky and later on to Montgomery County, Ohio where I was born. Out ofa family of twelve children, nine grew up and were married as follows:Lissa to Levi Bower, Nancy to Ben Warren, Polly to Samuel Taylor, Kata toAbraham Covault, Sophia to Erastus Virgil, Naomi first to Wm. Martindale, second to Rufas Way, third to Amos Vinson, and fourth to John Zeks,Cynthia married Jonathan Reeder and brother John married Betsy Pollard. Her mother and I both came from families in which there were halfbrothers and sisters. Brother Joseph had a son, Ephsum M. Hancock, whomarried and moved out west to somewhere in Kansas. Brother John’s Josephlives in Anderson. I am the youngest of twelve children and only one living. If I liveuntil June 16, I will be eighty-four years of age. Your GrandfatherJonathan Reeder’s grandparents were Irish. Their names were McCarnus andthey lived in Maryland. Dianna married John Reeder in Hampshire County,West Virginia. They had a family of six children the four oldest of whichwere born in Virginia and the remaining two in Ohio. Four of thesechildren lived to marry as follows : Jonathan to Cynthia Hancock (thewriter of this letter), Betsy to Wm. Murphy, Sallie, first to JohnMurphy, second to John Mellet. Jessie’s father, William Murphy’s son Junior, marred a Watson. Salliemarried a son of Watson Rows, an off-spring of Father’s half-sister.Millie Wallis married Mike Watson and moved out west. (The second Salliementioned may have been a mistaken name, either by Cynthia, or in one ofthe many times this letter has been recopied and handed down thru the years.) Jonna, I doubt whether you can get much sense from my scribbling butplease excuse all the errors. Jonna, when Father died his old familyBible and his discharge papers from the Revolutionary War went into thehands of Philip Hancock. Philip died at the home of Seth Adamson, F.Burkett’s uncle. If these things which I have mentioned, have been kept, I which you, throughBurketts, could get the family record the the discharge papers for me andI will be much obliged to you. As ever ‘till death, Grandma Reeder (Note : After studying this letter over and over I was amazed at thememory of this woman at the age of almost 84.
