| Burial | He was buried in August 1719 in Family Farm, Quonset Point, Rhode IslandG.4 |
| Will | He left a will. The will was signed by mark, 23 July 1719. Proved 29 August 1719, (East Greenwich TC & Probate, 1:15A-17). His wife Elizabeth is mentioned, along with his children: William, Mary, John, Anthony, Sarah, and one other daughter not named. There is massive confusion as to William's birthdate. His parents were married in 1679. His birthdate is sometimes listed 1679 and sometimes listed as 1683. He is acknowledged as being the second of ten children, but his older brother's birthdate is listed as 1687. This is further complicated by the listing of the third sibling, Elisha, as having been born in 1686 (which would be before the oldest brother, John, was born) or 1688, which is more logical except for William's birthdate.4 |

| Birth | Joseph Cory was born About 1690, in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode IslandG.2 |
| Marriage | He married Rebecca About 1721, in Kingston, Washington County, Rhode IslandG.1 |
| Marriage | He married Mary Reynolds on 22 November 1742, in Kingston, Washington County, Rhode IslandG. Some records indicate that he married Mary E. Baker on 2 March 1742, and that his second wife's name was Rebecca. Others indicate that he married his first wife, Mary Reynolds, about 1721 and his second wife, Mary Baker, on 22 November 1742. In his will, Joseph mentions sons, Thomas, Jonathan, Nathan, Silas; daughters, Elizabeth Gardner, Mary Jenkins, Rebecca Briggs, Ruth Corey; granddaughters, Rebecca & Alice Corey, daughters of son, Benjamin, deceased. The family lived at East Greenwich, Rhode Island where the children were born. Rhode Island Roots Volume 18 Dec 1992 has an article on five unknown children of John and Elizabeth Cory of Kingstown by Wayne M. Wilcox. On page 103; son Joseph born circa 1695 probably at Portsmouth, died between 29 Jan 1767 and 26 Mar 1768 when his will was proved at East Greenwich. This article states his first wife is a Rebecca born circa 1697 and died 18 Jul 1741 in her 44th year. Vital Records of Rhode Island shows Joseph marrying a Mary Baker of North Kingston on 22 Nov 1742. One problem, it appears that Mary Reynolds Corey is living in 1767 when Francis names her in his will. Abstract of Francis Reynolds will of West Greenwich. Will is dated 23 Dec 1767 and proved 26 Nov 1768, pages. 67-72 & 171. This will lists daughter Mary Corey and grandson Silas Corey and granddaughter Ruth Corey. If this is the case, then is it possible that the Mary Baker who married Joseph Corey is Mary Reynolds with a married name?2 |

| Note | According to the Drake Family History, 'Thomas Drake, his father and mother being dead, followed his relative, John Drake of Taunton, Mass., and Windsor, Conn., to America about 1653-4. He was accompanied by his sisters Joane... and Elizabeth...' 'Thomas Drake soon settled in Weymouth, Mass., his name first appearing on the records of that town in a list of property owners in 1663, in which he is described as owning 'Lot 70 containing six acres in 1st Division begininge on Brauntry lyne' and eighteen acres, Lot 33 in 2d Division. Prior to that, the latest list of land owners noted was that of November 26, 1651, in which his name does not appear; hence he settled in Weymouth after 1651, and before 1663. The frequency with which his name appears on the land deeds and war records of the times shows that Thomas Drake took an active part in the affairs of the town. His name occurs as witness on deeds December 15, 1664, and three years later he was a member of the Suffolk Troopers. He took an active part in King Philip's war, and June 24, 1676, was a member of the garrison at Punckapouge where he saw at least two months' service.' 'Plymouth Colony Deeds record large purchases of land by him on July 29, 1682, near the Taunton River in Freetown, half of which land he sold June 12, 1688, to Ralph Paine of Rhode Island. He died in Weymouth 1691, and his estate settled in 1692 was valued at 237 pounds, 2 pence, 2 shillings, a considerable sum at that time.' in 1653/54.1,5 |

| Marriage | He married Gertrude Fortescue, of Filleigh, daughter of Bartholomew Fortescue, Esq. of Filleigh, and Ellen Moore, of Moor Hayes in Cullompton,, in 1563.2 |
| Knighted | Sir Barnard Drake was knighted on 5 January 1585 in Greenwich, Middlesex County, EnglandG. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I. According to the Drake Family History, Sir Barnard was 'knighted at Greenwich, January 9, 1585. He was a very distinguished person and 'employed in several great offices at sea,' being much in favour with Queen Elizabeth, who conferred the honour of knighthood upon him. 'Prince, in his 'Worthies of Devon,' pp. 328, 329, says of him: I find him to descend down to us under a very honourable character. That he was a gentleman or rare and excellent accomplishments, and as well qualified for a soldier as a courtier; he was in great favour with that illustrious Princess of immortal memory--Queen Elizabeth--and of high esteem in her courts.... That Sir Barnard Drake, a Devonshire Knight, came to Newfoundland with a commission, and having divers good ships under his command he took many Portugal ships and brought them into England as prizes. And for his great undertaking this way he is ranked the second among the most famous sea captains of our country in his time,--than whom no age before or since can boast of greater.' He is said to have 'bobly expended.. for the honour and safety of his country in the discovery of foreign regions and such other virtuous achievements as purchase glory and renown,' so as 'greatly to have exhausted his estates.' Sir Bernard's last exploit was while England was at war with Spain, when having been at sea, on his return he took a large Portugal ship which had for a long season been hovering up and down the coast and brought her into the harbour of Dartmouth, which action, 'how brave soever it might be, proved fatal to himself and many other persons of quality.' Prince says, 'Sir Barnard Drake having taken a Portugal ship and brought her into one of our Western ports the seaman that were therein were sent to the prison adjoining to the castle of Exeter. At the next assizes held at the castle there, about the 27th of Queen Elizabeth, when the prisoners of the country were brouht to be arraigned before Sergeant Flowerby, one of the Judges appointed for his Western Circuit at that time, suddenly there arose such a noisom smess from the bar that a great number of the persons present were therewith infected, whereof in a short time after died Sir John Chichester, Sir Arthur Basset and Sir Barnard Drake Kinghts and Justices of the Peace then sitting on the bench, and eleven of the Jury impanelled, the 12th man only escaping, with divers other persons.' There is a monument of Sir Barnard Drake in the present Filleigh Church, built after the demolition of an older edifice. Also, the monument of his grave at Parish Church of Musbury mentions that he had three sons and three daughters, five living at his death: John, Hugh, Marie, Margaret and Helen.1,5,3,6 |
