Biographical Note |
- Ethan Allen, 1738-1789. American Revolutionary War leader. Born in Litchfield, Connecticut, Allen served in the French and Indian War and later obtained large tracts of land in Vermont. A supporter of independence for Vermont (then claimed by both New Hampshire and NewYork), he organized the 'Green Mountain Boy.' At the outbreak of the American Revolution, they joined with Benedict Arnold to capture Fort Ticonderoga, the first victory for the American side, but Allen was captured by the British in the subsequent invasion of Canada. Released by the British 1778, Allen continued to campaign for Vermont's autonomy but died before it achieved statehood in 1791.
