- Caroline was best known for her Gothic novel entitled Glenarvon, released in 1816. She published three additional novels: Graham Hamilton (1822), Ada Reis (1823) and Penruddock (1823).

- Caroline struggled with mental illness, which became more pronounced in her later years. She abused the use of alcohol and laudanum. After Lady Caroline's death William became 2nd Viscount Melbourne and British Primer Minister.
