552 "Peter and Janet lived in the Bedeque-Wilmot area. No deed appears on record that would identify the property, but Janet's death notice (in The Royal Gazette for Tuesday, March 25, 1851) gives her place of death as Wilmot Creek; we know that Peter's father owned the farms now in possession of Elmer and Colin Waugh and Alder Large on the south side of Wilmot River. It seems probable that Peter had settled on this tract when Janet died at the age of thirty-two. The four children were dispersed among relatives and the widower went to Shediac, New Brunswick, to manage a tavern-hotel for the widow Hanington. Her husband, George Hanington, had established the tavern in Shediac some years before, and his death left his wife with four young children and the business on her hands. Mrs. Hanington was a Kennedy, her mother a Darby. Her uncle Isaac had married Peter's cousin Mary; the Kennedys, Haningtons, and Darbys would be back and forth from St. Eleanors to Shediac and no doubt this is how Peter, his home broken up by the death of his wife, was secured as successor to Mr. Hanington. Successor he was, not only in the tavern, but in the home. He married the widow in 1853 and continued to operate the tavern, which according to F.R. Sayer, historian of Shediac Cape, stood on property afterward owned by Robert Murray adjoining the old Madras school grounds." 582 "The United Church at Kensington was packed to overflowing yesterday when friends from far and near gathered to pay respect to the memory of one of nature's nobleman, the late J. Melbourne Laird. A man of sterling qualities he was for many years vice-president of the Maritime Livestock Breeders' Association. He was also a very keen horseman and in his younger life was a consistent winner of livestock prizes at the Island all eastern Canada exhibitions.

Since his retirement from farming in Kelvin, Mr. Laird has maintained a large fox ranch in Kensington. Mr. Laird was mayor of the town for a number of years. He held the position as superintendent of the Sabbath School for a long period and was an Elder for the church. In all these capacities he gave his best, never thinking of self when he saw another in need.

His pastor, Rev. B. C. Salter, conducted the service and took for his text Hebrews 11:1 --"He being Dead Yet Speaketh." Mr. Salter was assisted by Rev. W. O. Road of the Presbyterian Church and Rev. G. N. Somers of the Margate United Charge. Lieut. Roscoe Walker sang very feelingly "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" Other hymns sung were "The Lord's My Shepherd," "Peace Perfect Peace" and "Rock of Ages." The pallbearers were James Jardine, Gordon Glover, Charles Taylor, Wm. Woodside, W. L. Cotton and Hugh Morrison. Interment was in the People's Cemetery, Kensington. The beautiful flowers bore silent testimony to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Wreaths included one from the citizens of the town of Kensington and the Session of the United Church."

588 "Two Island girls, Bertha and Daisy Brace, daughters of R. K. Brace of Charlottetown, were drowned in the St. Clair River, just below Sarnia, Ont., last week. Both were officers in the Salvation Army. The young ladies, accompanied by Miss Cooper of the local army, were spending the afternoon by the river, and the sisters were bathing. Miss Daisy, the younger, was an expert swimmer. The two had been in the water about five minutes and were splashing about with arms clasped when they slipped over the channel bank into deep water and disappeared. Miss Cooper called for help, and Robert Harrison, a chain maker from the Standard Chain works nearby, and others, responded, but the bodies had completely disappeared. Miss Bertha Brace arrived in Sarnia this spring. Her sister came from Boston two weeks ago. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents and relatives in this province." BRACE, Bertha Bread (I16346)

599 "While in Young's Cove Road, New Brunswick, Canada, I saw a report of the death of Ebenezer's father, Charles Slocum, who married Sarah Allen, daughter of Ebenezer and Margaret Allen. On April 9 1777, two Yankees came to his house, had dinner and were treated to cider, after which they stood by the garden fence and chatted pleasantly. Suddenly, one drew a pistol and shot Mr. Slocum through the body, and he died in a few moments. The son, Ebenezer (aged abt. 22 years), avenged the death by killing many of the rebels. At one time, 25 men came to the house to capture him. He was upstairs in bed. The Captain posted a man at each window and two over the portico where there was a hole in the roof. The article doesn't say how he escaped." This story from Verna Haywood Coe Rissell. SLOCUM, Charles (I235)
