311 "At Bedeque, on the 7th inst., Thomas Robins, Esq., in the 80th year of his age." (The Examiner) "Died in Centreville, Bedeque, on the 7th inst., at the residence of Murdoch McLeod, Esq., Thomas Robins, senr., in the 86th year of his age. Mr. Robins was a descendant of a family of Loyalists who emigrated to this Island at the close of the Revolutionary War of the U.S. His parents located themselves in Cape Traverse, where the deceased was born in Sept. 1796. Having lost his father at an early age, his widowed mother, with her family of six children, removed to Bedeque, just seventy years ago, the first of the present month, there to face the difficulties and endure the hardships, and which were neither few nor slight, attendant on a new settlement. Often has he entertained the writer with a description of the almost insurmountable difficulties they had to contend with on their first settlement in Bedeque, but having been provided by Nature with a stalwart frame and a superior constitution, together with tact and talent, he overcame every obstacle and became one of our principal farmers, reared and educated a large and respectable family, some of whom are holding high positions of honor and responsibility both in the Dominion and in the United States. As a neighbour he was proverbial for his kindness and obliging disposition. His house was ever the welcome home for the stranger and the traveller, and he never seemed to enjoy life so well as when surrounded by his friends and acquaintances. He was a genial warm-hearted companion, a kind and loving husband and indulgent parent. But the good old man has passed away, yet long will his name be held in grateful remembrance, and his memory cherished by those he has left behind. He died having a good hope beyond the grave."
